What Happened to Roe v. Wade?
The Day Roe v. Wade was Overturned
On June 24, 2022, the United States Supreme Court issued its decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, overturning Roe v. Wade and Planned Parenthood v. Casey.
For nearly 50 years, Roe v. Wade had established a federal constitutional right to abortion. With the Dobbs decision, the Supreme Court held that the U.S. Constitution does not confer a right to abortion and returned the authority to regulate abortion to the people and their elected representatives.
For those committed to protecting preborn life, June 24, 2022, marked a historic moment.
What Did Dobbs Change?
Dobbs did not make abortion illegal throughout the United States. Instead, it returned decisions about abortion laws primarily to individual states and their elected representatives.
As a result, abortion laws now vary considerably from state to state and may change as new laws are enacted and court cases are decided.
Did the Dobbs Decision Change Daybreak?
Our laws may change. Our mission does not.
Before the Dobbs decision, Daybreak served women and men facing unexpected pregnancies. After Dobbs, we continued doing exactly that.
Women still find themselves facing pregnancies they did not expect. Moms and dads still need compassionate care, accurate information, encouragement and practical help. And there are still women who believe abortion may be their only option.
Daybreak is here for them.
Why Daybreak Is Still Needed
Daybreak believes that protecting preborn life also means caring for moms and dads.
Through the generosity of our donors, Daybreak provides no-cost pregnancy testing, limited OB ultrasounds, options consultations, counseling, education, practical resources and support to women and men facing unexpected pregnancies.
We walk alongside moms and dads—not only as they make decisions about their pregnancies, but as they prepare to become loving, capable parents.
Most importantly, we have the opportunity to share the hope of the Gospel and the love of Jesus Christ with those God brings through our doors.
The Work Continues
The overturning of Roe v. Wade was a significant moment in our nation’s history, but it was not the end of the pro-life mission.
Daybreak has been serving our community since 1983, and we remain committed to protecting preborn life, caring for women and men facing unexpected pregnancies, strengthening families and sharing the Gospel.
Abortion or no abortion, we are here.
